London. With millions of UK tourists flocking to London, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations are having a buoyant effect on retail jobs, which has seen its first increase in nearly a decade.
Retailers expect this boom in new recruitmentto continue over the next month, with retailers planning to recruit more staff compared with a year ago (an increase of 7%). This optimism is expected to continue through the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and over the Olympic and Paralympic Games during the summer.
Judith McKenna, chairwoman of the CBI’s retail survey panel, said: “It’s encouraging to see high-street sales up compared to a year ago, and that business sentiment about the next three months has improved.”
Separately, Reuters reports that Britannia rules the retail sales ahead of UK Jubilee. The British public has an appetite for anything with a Union Jack on it, and people are expected to spend £823m on bunting, paper crowns, tiaras, porcelain corgis and other Jubilee memorabilia.
Reuters quotes British Retail Consortium economist Richard Lim saying: The Jubilee has the potential to create a feel-good factor that lifts consumer confidence and persuades people to put their concerns to one side, even if only temporarily.”
Agency Zone Editor, Karen Dempsey said:
“‘With the UK in celebratory mood – what with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this weekend, and the Olympics on their way at the end of next month – recruiters are beginning to have something to shout about. We’re seeing an increase in retail recruitment, thanks to the buoyant demand created by these unique events – and in Scotland, too, recruitment is enjoying its first boost for some time” Source: Agency Zone.
