Home Office to remove right of appeal on family visitor visa refusals

Whilst it may be the case that 95% of applications were ‘decided’ within 15 days, how many of those decisions made by fellow Entry Clearance Officers’ (ECO’s) were made in favour of the family visa applicant? The reason the courts take longer to process appeals is because so many visa applicants have to resort to the First Tier and Upper Tier Tribunals to overturn bad decisions.

Switzerland to close door on immigration from EU states

The Swiss government will curb immigration and free movement from all EU countries from next month for at least one year, the BBC reports. Swiss immigration caps on 8 central and eastern EU member states are to be extended to 17 other EU states. Bulgarian and Romanian immigration is blocked under separate rules.

English language test providers to be asked to re-tender for contract

The results, whilst not conclusive, indicate that whilst some student visa applicants may be holding IELTS scores of 6.00 and 6.5, their actual ability to speak English may not match the figures on their certificates. Private colleges have reported that a high percentage of student applicants from India and Pakistan are being refused visas on the basis of a few questions fired at them by an ECO behind a plate glass screen.

Bent accountant jailed for helping sham marriage gang

EEA Nationals are being used by sham marriage gangs as marriages to EEA citizens are not subject to the strict Immigration Rules (e.g. minimum £18600) imposed ob British Citizens marrying a non-EU person. Strangely, although the UK is part of the EEA, its citizens are not recognised by the UKBA as EEA nationals. Until this anomaly, which discriminates against British people, is cleared up sham marriage gangs will use the ‘EEA’ loophole to get migrants into the UK by the back door.

UK Border Agency’s operation exposed by undercover reporters

Channel 4’s Dispatches programme presenter Morland Sanders investigates whether Britain’s immigration system is fit for purpose.
