“How Can I Come to the UK?”
“How can I get a Work Permit?”
“How can I get a visa?”
I must be asked these questions one hundred times a day and my answer is the same…
“There are hundreds of ways to legally come to the UK depending on your situation. Everyone’s situation and circumstances are different and all you have to do is find the most appropriate route for you.”
“How do I do that?” they ask.
No short answer to that one, but here are some basic steps taken from the book
Chapter 8 of the book, “Getting Started”, shows you how to do just that. It also includes an Action Plan to help get you on the right road.
Start by asking yourself the following questions.
- Where am I now?
- Where do I want to be?
- What steps do I have to take to get there?
How 2 Come to the UK
Where am I now?
Be realistic. What skills and qualifications do you possess and, more importantly, what value can you give to the marketplace? Let’s say your goal is to come to the UK to work. Is your current occupation in demand or on the official Home Office “shortage occupations” list (see Chapter 1)? Are there job vacancies listed in your field (see Useful Websites)? Are your skills in demand and, if not, can you study to gain those skills? Think of yourself as a business or a corporation and think of your skills or labour as your “product” to sell to the marketplace.
Are your qualifications comparable to the UK standard?
You may need a NARIC ASSESSMENT to compare your qualification
Now ask yourself this question: Is there a market for my “product”?…
Where do I want to be?
What are your goals, objectives and purpose in life? What course of study do you wish to take? What job would you like or what type of business would you like to start? Which places would you like to visit? Where would you like to be in 3, 5 or 10 years from now? What country would you like to be living in? What sort house would you like to own? What car would you like to be driving? What lifestyle do you aspire to? Write it all down.
What steps do I have to take?
What do you have to do to achieve your goal? What will you have to give in return for a better life? There is no such thing as something for nothing and there is always a price to pay if you want to be successful or achieve a goal. Only you can decide whether or not the price you will have to pay to reach you goal is worth it.
What information do you need to gather to achieve your objectives? The internet is the ideal place to start your research and many useful sites are listed in this chapter. We have never had so much information literally at our fingertips!
Review your options and decide on your priorities. Decide what daily, weekly and monthly action you need to take to move you closer to your goal. Whatever your situation, start taking ACTION!
Right now, take a clean sheet of paper and write out a simple PLAN. Even if your plan is a simple list of goals and objectives, the important thing is to GET STARTED and to write it all down now!
