Illegal migrants can apparentlyenter Britain without their passports being checked, it has emerged.

Conservative MP for Harlow Robert Halfon , claimed that he had uncovered a way terrorists could enter the UK illegally, the Daily Mail reports.

He said that immigration and special branch officers had complained that extremists were able to use a “Common Area Travel Channel” which allows people access to the country without their passports being checked.

Typically they flew into London, with an additional air ticket from a different destination in the British Isles.

They then used this air ticket to walk through the “common area” where travellers are not normally asked to show their passports, the paper said.

“Given the Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee next year, is the Prime Minister aware that immigration and special branch officers at Stansted Airport are concerned that the ‘Common Area Travel Channel’ in its current form allows illegal migrants, Islamists and terrorists into the country without their passports being checked,” Halfon said.

“Will he take urgent steps to close this loophole immediately?” he added.

In response to the revelation, PM David Cameron said Halfon had made an “important point” and he will look at shutting down a loophole at airports.

“Passport-free travel between the UK, the crown dependencies and the Republic of Ireland has been in place for many years and it does offer some real economic and social benefits,” the paper quoted Cameron, as saying.

“I do accept these routes can be open to abuse and we are determined to resolve this,” he said.

“The UK Border Agency is working very closely with Ireland and others to make sure this happens. But we’ve got to try to do that, without disadvantaging people who’ve been able to take advantage of the ‘Common Area Travel Channel’ up to now,” he added.
