Cambridge jumped ahead of Harvard to take first place in the world league table of universities, the first time in the list’s seven year history that the US university has been knocked off the top spot.

The QS table is based on measures of research quality, graduate employability, teaching and how international the faculties and student bodies are.

Although Harvard was still most popular among the 5,000 employers polled worldwide, Cambridge was voted best for research quality in a survey of 15,000 academics and took overall first place.

Four British Universities Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial College and UCL, appeared in the top ten, proving that the UK is still a leading force in international education.

Cambridge University, like Oxford, comprises of a number of ‘colleges’ within the city. Potential students should be aware of similar named colleges using ‘Oxford’ or ‘Cambridge’ in their titles which are not part of these ancient institutions.

Overseas students are worth £8.3 billion to the UK’s economy and their fees are vital to the cash strapped education sector.

  3. Good point Mr Shelley!

  4. Philip Shelley says :

I am pleased that Cambridge has done so well in this latest league table of universities. This shows that the underlying quality of British education is still of a very high standard. I would be interested to learn why Harvard polls so well amongst employers world wide ?? I would have thought that Cambridge, Oxford, Eaton etc would still be seen as producing the very best of employable graduates.
